Gerd Arntz Documentary Title Sequence
About Project
My first foray into motion graphics in After Effects, an animated title sequence for a fictional documentary focusing on the work of graphic designer Gerd Arntz incorporating the principles of ISOTYPE and animating some of Arntz’ own work, having his forms move and interact with the typography of the credit names. Geared towards the general audience of art documentaries as well as people interested in signage and nonverbal communication, aimed at creating a fun, exciting mood that gets viewers enthused about watching the documentary.
Process
I began with creating a moodboard of colors, title sequences, etc. I wanted to emulate. Then I gathered plenty of images from the Gerd Arntz Web Archive that inspired my creativity, and started making sketches with them and brainstorming movement. I knew I wanted to use the image of the men walking, so I created a style frame using it, as well as setting up a grid. Once I had chosen each of the images from the archive I wanted to use, I brought them into Adobe Illustrator.
I used image trace to vectorize each of the images, and went in and refined each of the traced images. Most were simple; however, some required some extra work: for the rabbit logo, I needed a version where it was sitting, so I used the original form created by Arntz and edited it to create a sitting version. For the windmill logo and the man writing logo, there was a part of the illustration I needed to move - the blades of the windmill, and the pen in the man’s hand. I created these on a separate layer to be able to move and retain the same white outlines as the original. Once the forms were to my satisfaction, I added texture back to the images.
